Day 5 Diary by Brittany Boldizsar

Since we were up till midnight the night before eating at Cosi, we had the privilege to "sleep in" an extra half hour or so and woke up at 6:30am. Our practice consisted of a lot of kicking in the hot three- lane side pool and we would later be hurting with all the walking that was to come. The main set was our choice (thank goodness!) and we left the pool right before the Curl- Burke team started dry land (good thing we got out of that!!) For the third time on the trip, we ate at Cosi and then took the metro to the Union Station. After descending 5 floors underground to what I thought looked like an alien transporting station, we bought our $2.70 ticket with the elevator safety tips on the front of it. We loaded up into the metro train and zoomed off! We guessed that the train was moving about 80 mph and commercials played on the walls outside the train! It was like one of those flip books where the things move! After about 4 stops, we arrived at Union Station and began our miles of walking. First we saw the White House where I was dumbfounded standing outside the gate. Everyone took pictures and then we headed off towards the Washington Monument. As we were walking Jim said to me, "Hey Bo, jump the fence and see how far you can get." As much as I would like to, I came to the conclusion that it probably would not be a good idea...hahaha. At the monument, everyone ran over and laid down to witness how tall it really is. I swear I have never seen any building that tall before! After tons of pictures, we started our hike to the Lincoln Memorial. As we walked, we hit the World War II Memorial and then walked along side the reflection pond. Britny Went and I took out pennies to compare the back of it to the Lincoln Memorial. Sure enough, they looked the same! We were witnessing it in real life!! We tossed our pennies into the reflection pond hoping our wishes would come true...that we wouldn't have practice this afternoon =) After taking pictures of Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address that was engraved on the building, we headed towards the Korean War Memorial. Statues of soldiers were in the shape of a triangle and there was a pond like thing with what looked like an infinity pool. Walking back towards the center of the Mall, we discovered TV news cameras and lights being set up. It was for the Procession of President Ford. We could not pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity of witnessing history so we decided to grab a bite to eat and wait for the Procession that was to start at 6pm....so we had to miss practice...oh darn...OUR WISHES CAME TRUE! We ate Polish Hot Dogs, Pretzels and Egg Rolls at a street stand and went back to where the Procession would take place. There were tons of security and secret service men and that's when I decided that I am going to be in the CIA! The lights were beaming in the dark with all the monuments lit up as we watched the hearse go by in silence. We then preceded back to the metro station with our faces frozen and wind burned. After the metro ride we grabbed a bite to eat at a McDonald's and got back early to the hotel (around 8:30pm). As we packed our suitcases, we watched the ceremony of President Ford in the Capitol Building where he would be open to the public for them to see. WOW! What a full day! But man, everything we saw blew me away and I still can not believe that we saw in person all of these historical monuments. |
